Stewart - Matilda Powell

Matilda Jane Powell, daughter of John and Elizabeth Powell, was born in Bath county, Ky., March 20, 1840 and died Oct. 11, 1920, bring 80 years , six months and 21 days of age. In her infancy she with her parents moved to Parkersburg, Ind. and at the age of fourteen came to New Ross where she has since lived in or near the latter place. In August, 1859, she was united in marriage to James Allen Stewart. To them four children were born, two of whom died in infancy, a third Homer, died Sept. 2, 1896, being 24 years of age. The husband, one son, Marion I. Stewart and two grandchildren, Lulu and Cecil survive. The deceased being the fourth child of a family of sixteen children is survived by two sisters, Eliza Miller and Mary E. Bowman, both of New Ross, and six half-brothers, John L. of Oklahoma, Will and Messer of New Ross, Chas. of Wallace, Newton of Bainbridge and Elmer of Maplewood, Ind. Mrs. Stewart was a staunch Christian friend and neighbor, a woman truly loved and respected by all who knew her. She united with the Providence church a mere girl, later placing her membership with the church at New Ross where she engaged as long as her health permitted in all activities of her chosen place of worship. She leaves a host of friends and relatives to mourn her death.
